Walk into almost any garden centre and you'll find bags labelled "potting soil." The name sounds straightforward. It suggests someone simply collected soil, cleaned it, bagged it, and put it on a shelf. That is rarely what happened. Many commercial potting mixes contain very little natural soil. Some contain none at all. That is not a shortcut or a cost-saving measure. It is the entire point.
Containers behave differently from the ground
Plants growing in the earth have access to an enormous volume of surrounding soil. Water moves downward and sideways. Roots continue exploring new ground. Soil organisms migrate naturally. Temperature changes happen slowly. A container creates a completely different environment. Roots are confined. Water has only one direction to leave. The growing medium dries faster, heats faster, cools faster, and has a limited supply of air. Simply digging up garden soil and filling a pot with it often creates more problems than it solves.
A potting mix is built, not found
Instead of relying on one material, potting mixes combine ingredients that each contribute something different. Bark creates structure and air spaces. Coir or peat helps retain moisture. Perlite increases drainage and aeration. Compost contributes organic matter and nutrients. Vermiculite helps retain both water and dissolved nutrients. Each ingredient performs a job. The mix is designed rather than discovered.
Watching two recipes get built from the same ingredient list
A seed-starting mix and an orchid mix draw from the same shelf of materials and arrive at almost opposite recipes, because they're solving opposite problems. Seed-starting mix is built mostly from fine peat or coir and vermiculite, sieved to remove any large particles. A germinating seed has no established root system yet — it needs a medium fine enough for a hairlike root to push through easily, and consistently moist enough that the seed never dries out during the days it takes to sprout. Bark stays out entirely. Its chunks are too large and its air pockets too big for a structure this fragile; compost stays out too, since fresh seedlings don't need heavy fertility, and unfinished compost can carry pathogens a seed has no defenses against yet.
An orchid mix is built almost backwards. It's mostly large bark chunks, sometimes with a handful of charcoal or coarse perlite added, and almost nothing fine at all. Orchid roots in the wild grow exposed to open air, wrapped around tree bark rather than buried in the ground — they photosynthesize and need constant airflow around every root, not just at the surface. Fine peat or vermiculite packed around those roots would suffocate them within weeks. The same ingredient list produced two mixes with almost nothing in common, because the recipe follows the root, not the ingredient shelf.
The goal is controlling the root environment
A potting mix is not trying to imitate field soil. It is trying to create predictable conditions inside a container. How quickly should water drain? How much air should remain around the roots? How long should moisture stay available? How stable should the structure remain as the ingredients slowly decompose? Those questions shape the recipe far more than trying to recreate natural earth.
Not every plant needs the same mix
An orchid mix often contains large pieces of bark because orchid roots naturally grow with abundant airflow. A cactus mix usually drains rapidly to prevent roots remaining wet for long periods. A seed-starting mix is typically fine, light, and uniform so young roots can establish easily. Houseplants, vegetables, bonsai, carnivorous plants, and tropical foliage all benefit from different combinations of ingredients. The recipe changes because the plants do.
Garden soil often struggles inside containers
Soil that performs beautifully in a garden may become dense inside a pot. Repeated watering can collapse its structure, reducing the spaces that normally hold both air and water. Drainage slows. Roots receive less oxygen. Compaction becomes more likely. The problem is not that the soil is poor. It is being asked to perform a job it was never designed to do.
Potting mixes continue changing
No growing medium stays exactly the same. Organic ingredients decompose. Fine particles settle. Air spaces shrink. Water begins moving differently. Even an excellent mix eventually behaves differently from the day it was first used. That is why repotting is often less about giving the plant a larger container and more about rebuilding the environment around its roots.
Understanding the mix is more useful than memorising the recipe
Many gardeners search for the perfect potting mix recipe. A more useful question is why each ingredient is there in the first place. Once you understand what bark, perlite, compost, coir, sand, vermiculite, or pumice contribute, you begin understanding how the entire growing medium works. The recipe becomes easier to adjust because you understand the function of every component.
