1: Drainage and Water Retention Aren't Opposites You Balance — They're Both Structure
A soil that drains well and a soil that holds moisture aren't on a simple sliding scale against each other. Both come from the same thing: how well the medium's particles create air pockets and surface area. Fix the structure, and you often get better performance on both at once.
2: What Fixed One Plant's Soil Might Ruin Another's
Adding perlite or sand to loosen a heavy mix works great for succulents, but the same fix can starve a moisture-loving plant like a fern. Always match the amendment to what the specific plant actually needs, not to a general "better soil" instinct.
