Metaphor — Figurative Meaning Decoder

1: Find the Mapping First

Every metaphor borrows structure from something else — figure out what's being compared to what before asking why it works. "Drowning in work" only makes sense once you see the swap: workload standing in for water, and you struggling to stay afloat.

2: Notice What It Hides

A metaphor never shows the whole picture. It highlights some things and quietly leaves others out. "Drowning in work" makes the pressure visible but can hide choice, control, or how the workload got assigned in the first place.
