Two Rational Players, One Bad Outcome
Two people can each make the most rational choice available to them and still end up somewhere worse than if they'd coordinated. This is the actual paradox at the center of game theory, and it explains far more standoffs, price wars, and stalemates than "someone made a bad decision" ever could.
Two shops on the same street both keep prices high
Imagine two competing shops on the same street, each deciding whether to keep prices high or cut them. If both keep prices high, both do well. If one cuts prices while the other doesn't, the price-cutter wins most of the customers. Knowing this, each shop reasons the same way: whatever the other one does, I'm better off cutting my own price too. Both cut. Both end up earning less than if neither had cut at all.
Neither shop made an irrational choice. Given what the other might do, cutting was the correct move in isolation, every time. The outcome — both worse off — was rational at the individual level and bad at the collective level simultaneously. That combination is what a Nash equilibrium actually is: a state where no single player can do better by changing their own choice alone, even when a different combined outcome would have served everyone better.

Nobody has to be wrong for a standoff to hold
A Nash equilibrium doesn't require anyone to be foolish, greedy, or short-sighted. It only requires that each player is doing the best they individually can, given what the other is doing. That's what makes it stable — and also what makes it so resistant to a simple appeal to "just be reasonable." Everyone already is being reasonable. That's the entire problem.
Two countries maintaining a costly arms buildup show the same shape. Neither wants the expense. Each would prefer mutual disarmament. But each also knows that unilaterally disarming while the other doesn't leaves them exposed, so both keep building. There can be more than one equilibrium
A single situation can actually have multiple Nash equilibria — several different stable arrangements, none of which any player can unilaterally improve on, but which differ enormously in how good they are overall. Two drivers approaching each other on an otherwise empty road can settle into "everyone drives on the left" or "everyone drives on the right" — both are perfectly stable once established, and neither is inherently superior. The hard part isn't reaching an equilibrium. It's that a group can get stuck in a worse one simply because it was the first one reached, with no individual player having enough reason on their own to try shifting toward a better alternative.
Changing the equilibrium means changing the incentives
Because a Nash equilibrium is stable exactly as long as the incentives that created it stay in place, moral appeals alone rarely dislodge it. What actually shifts the outcome is a change to the structure itself: a binding agreement with real enforcement, a trusted third party who can verify compliance, or repeated interaction where reputation starts to carry a cost that a single encounter never would.
Two negotiators who expect to work together again behave differently than two strangers in a one-time deal, precisely because the "game" itself has changed — the same underlying incentives now include a future that punishes bad behavior in a way a single transaction never could.
Stable and good are different things
The uncomfortable part of Nash equilibrium is that "stable" and "good" are two completely separate qualities. A situation can be perfectly stable — nobody has any individual reason to change course — while still being worse for every single person involved than some other arrangement nobody can reach alone. Recognizing that gap is often the first step toward actually closing it, because it reframes the problem from "why is everyone being unreasonable" to "what would have to change structurally for a better equilibrium to become reachable."
