The Number Everyone Misreads

Working memory — the mental space where you actively hold and juggle new information — has a hard ceiling. George Miller's original 1956 estimate put it at seven items, plus or minus two. More recent work, particularly Nelson Cowan's, argues the real number is closer to four once you strip out the mental tricks people use to inflate it.

Either way, the number barely moves across healthy adults. It doesn't meaningfully increase with age, education, or general intelligence. A tenured physics professor and a sharp twelve-year-old are working with almost the same raw capacity for holding brand-new information in mind at once.

That single fact is what "explain it like I'm five" actually means, and why the ELI5 request isn't really about age at all. The four-or-so-slot ceiling a five-year-old works within is close to the same ceiling every adult has for anything genuinely unfamiliar. The room isn't bigger for adults. What's different is how much of that room already has furniture in it before the new information walks through the door.

Why Experts Don't Feel the Limit

The clearest demonstration is Chase and Simon's chess studies from the 1970s. Chess masters could look at a real mid-game board for a few seconds and reconstruct nearly the entire position from memory. Shown a board with the same number of pieces placed randomly, not from any real game, their advantage disappeared completely. They performed no better than beginners.

The masters weren't holding more raw positions in their heads. They were recognizing large, pre-learned chunks — this opening structure, that attack formation — and each chunk occupied only one working-memory slot instead of six or seven individual piece locations.

Take away the real chess logic, and a master is instantly reduced to the same four-slot ceiling as everyone else. This is also the real answer to why some people can understand complicated things so fast while others can't: it's rarely raw intelligence, it's how many pre-built chunks they're bringing into the room.

That mechanism generalizes past chess. A physicist doesn't have a bigger container for new information. They have decades of pre-built chunks — vector spaces, established notation, prior derivations — dense enough that a genuinely new concept only costs them one or two of their four slots. Someone without that library has to spend all four just holding unfamiliar vocabulary in place before reaching the actual idea.

What ELI5 Is Actually Asking For

Read this way, asking someone to explain something in simple terms, or asking what ELI5 actually means when someone uses it, is a precise, reasonable request. It means: I have no pre-built chunks in this domain, so don't make me spend my four slots on vocabulary before I even reach the idea itself. It isn't a claim about reduced reasoning ability, and it isn't condescending to ask for it — it's an accurate description of having an empty long-term-memory library in one particular subject.

It also explains something that would otherwise seem contradictory: the same person can reasonably ask for an ELI5 on tax law in the morning and explain quantum entanglement to a colleague that same afternoon. Nothing about their underlying working memory changed. What changed is which specific domain they'd already spent years quietly pre-loading.

Why It Feels Like a Personal Failing Anyway

The uncomfortable feeling behind wondering why you can't understand things the way you used to, or why you feel dumber than you used to be, usually comes from conflating two systems that mature on completely different timelines. General reasoning ability — following a chain of logic, spotting when something doesn't add up — matures early and stays fairly stable through adulthood. Domain-specific chunk libraries don't work that way. They don't transfer between domains and don't build themselves just because a person got older in general.

A sharp, capable 45-year-old has roughly the same number of pre-built chunks for maritime law, or 14th-century trade routes, as an equally sharp twelve-year-old — close to none, unless one of them actually studied it. Age and general intelligence aren't the missing variable. Domain-specific preparation is.

Simplify Tool Insight

Once the mechanism is this specific, "simplify this" stops meaning "make it smaller" and starts meaning something more precise: find which chunks the listener is missing, then either supply those chunks first or route around the need for them. A genuinely good simple explanation isn't doing less work than a technical one — it's doing the chunk-building work an expert audience would already have done for themselves, years earlier, before the conversation even started.
