Two different requests wearing one phrase

Ask someone to explain quantum entanglement "like I'm five" and you'll get one of two things: something so watered down it's no longer true, or something that still uses words a five-year-old has never heard. ELI5 sounds like a solvable problem. Most of the time, it isn't — and the reason has nothing to do with the explainer trying hard enough.

The actual demand hidden inside "explain it simply"

"Simple" is doing two completely different jobs at once, and ELI5 pretends they're the same job. Sometimes "simple" means fewer words, shorter sentences, no jargon — a compression problem. Sometimes "simple" means the underlying idea itself is genuinely graspable without years of background — a comprehension problem. A request to "ELI5 the stock market" is usually asking for compression: say it shorter, skip the finance vocabulary. A request to "ELI5 quantum entanglement" is asking for something compression can't deliver, because the idea itself requires background the five-year-old doesn't have and can't be handed in one sentence.

Where the actual failure happens

Take a genuine ELI5 attempt at entanglement: "when two particles are connected, and you check one, the other instantly matches it, no matter how far apart they are." That sentence is short, uses no jargon, and a five-year-old could repeat it back. It's also subtly wrong — it implies information travels between the particles, which isn't what's happening, and physicists spend real effort correcting exactly this misreading. The explanation didn't fail because it was too complicated. It failed because compressing the idea down to five-year-old vocabulary required dropping the one detail that kept it accurate, and there was no way to keep both the simplicity and the correctness at once.

Why some ideas survive compression and others don't

"How does a lever work" survives ELI5 completely intact — push down on one end, the other end goes up, and a five-year-old can watch it happen on a playground seesaw. Nothing true gets lost in the compression, because the concept was never more complicated than the compressed version in the first place. "How does compound interest work" survives partially — the growing-snowball image gets the shape of the idea across, even if the exact math doesn't. "Why does entanglement not allow faster-than-light communication" doesn't survive at all, because the correct answer depends on distinguishing correlation from causation, a distinction that itself requires background the five-year-old frame doesn't have room for.

The actual test, before attempting an ELI5

Not "can I say this in short words" — almost anything can be said in short words. The real question is whether the idea's accuracy depends on a detail too advanced to compress, or whether the idea was simple all along and just dressed up in jargon. A lot of "explain this simply" requests are really "translate this jargon" requests, and those work fine. A smaller number are "make this genuinely elementary" requests aimed at ideas that were never elementary in the first place, and those are the ones ELI5 quietly fails on, producing a confident, memorable, wrong version instead of admitting the idea doesn't fit the frame.

Why the failure isn't visible until later

The dangerous part isn't that ELI5 sometimes fails — it's that the failed version feels exactly as satisfying as a successful one. A five-year-old-level sentence about entanglement sounds just as clean and confident as a five-year-old-level sentence about levers, so there's no signal at the moment of reading that one of them quietly dropped something essential. The wrongness only surfaces later, if the person goes on to build more understanding on top of a foundation that skipped the one detail that mattered.
