The Same Idea, Five Real Depths

Take one real idea — why we dream — and explain it five times, at five genuinely different depths, watching exactly where the explanation has to change shape, not just shrink.

Level one: a child

"When you sleep, your brain doesn't turn off. It keeps playing, like a movie made out of your memories and imagination all mixed together. Sometimes the movie is fun. Sometimes it's scary. But it's not real — it's just your brain still working while your body rests." No mechanism, no vocabulary — just the core shape of the experience, expressed as something a child can picture without needing to know what REM sleep even is.

Level two: a teenager

"Your brain goes through different stages while you sleep, and during one stage called REM sleep, it becomes almost as active as when you're awake — just disconnected from your body, so you don't act out what's happening.

Nobody fully agrees on why this happens, but the leading ideas are that it helps sort and store memories, or that it's your brain making sense of random electrical activity, or that it's practicing how to handle scary situations before they actually happen." Now there's an actual mechanism — REM sleep, brain activity without body movement — plus a first hint that this is contested territory, not settled fact.

Level three: an undergraduate

"Three major theories compete to explain dreaming. Activation-synthesis theory holds that dreams are the cortex's attempt to interpret essentially random signals firing up from the brainstem during REM sleep — the story is constructed after the fact, not the point of the process.

Memory consolidation theory holds that dreaming reflects the transfer of information from short-term hippocampal storage to long-term cortical storage.

Threat-simulation theory holds that dreaming is an evolved rehearsal space for practicing threat response, which is why dream content skews disproportionately toward danger, chasing, and conflict." Formal structure enters here — three competing, named theories, each with its own proposed mechanism, rather than a single agreed-upon explanation.

Level four: a graduate student

"None of the three standard theories fully explains the evidence on its own. Activation-synthesis struggles to account for how narratively coherent and emotionally consistent dreams typically are — genuinely random firing should produce noise, not the largely intact storylines most people report. Memory consolidation theory has strong correlational support from sleep-and-learning studies but has never established that dreaming itself, rather than sleep more generally, is the necessary mechanism.

Threat-simulation theory explains content bias toward danger reasonably well but says little about non-threatening dream content, which is the majority of it." The explanation now treats each theory as incomplete rather than simply true, weighing evidence against every model rather than presenting one as the answer.

Level five: a peer

"The real tension in the field right now isn't which of the three theories is correct — it's a finding that undercuts the premise all three share: that dreaming itself is functionally necessary. Case studies of patients with damage to brain regions associated with dream generation, who report few or no dreams, show memory consolidation proceeding largely intact regardless.

If consolidation happens with or without dreaming, dreaming may be a byproduct of a genuinely necessary process — sleep-stage brain activity — rather than the necessary process itself. That reframes the entire question: not 'which theory explains why we dream,' but 'is dreaming doing any independent work at all, or just riding along with something else that is.'" At this level, the explanation drops the three-theory framing entirely and treats the field's actual foundational assumption as the open question.

What actually changed across the five levels

Not just vocabulary, and not just how much detail got added. Level one and two describe the same basic experience at different resolutions — a strange nightly mental movie, then a named brain state producing it. Level three formalizes that experience into three distinct, competing named mechanisms. Level four complicates each of those three by weighing them against evidence that doesn't fully fit any of them.

Level five drops the three-theory framing that every earlier level assumed was the real structure of the debate, and reopens a more basic question underneath it. Each jump isn't simply "more information" bolted onto the last version — it's a different kind of move: concretizing, then formalizing, then complicating, then reopening.

Why this matters for anyone trying to explain something

Most people, asked to "go deeper" on an explanation, just add more facts at the same level — more examples, more detail, all still living inside the same basic frame. Real depth doesn't work that way.

It requires actually changing the kind of move being made — formalizing a mechanism, introducing competing explanations, complicating a model with evidence that doesn't fit it, or reopening a question that seemed settled — not simply saying more about the same thing in the same way.

Explaining something more deeply isn't the same as explaining it with more words. Real depth requires a different kind of move at each level — concretizing, formalizing, complicating, and eventually reopening the question — not just adding more facts inside the same frame the first explanation already used.
