One Question, Several Axes
"What's the difference between X and Y?" sounds like a request for one clean dividing line. Most of the time, the honest answer is that there isn't just one — there are several real, non-overlapping distinctions bundled under a single question, and picking only one of them produces an explanation that's accurate but incomplete, leaving the asker with a half-answer they didn't know was half.
Jam and jelly aren't different by one rule
Ask the difference between jam and jelly and most explanations give a single answer: jelly is strained clear, jam has fruit pieces in it. That's true, but it's only one of the actual distinctions. Jelly is made from fruit juice; jam is made from crushed or pureed whole fruit — a difference in starting ingredient, not just texture. Jam typically uses less sugar and less added pectin than jelly, because whole fruit already contains more natural pectin than juice does — a difference in recipe chemistry. Someone told only "jelly is smoother" has a correct fact and an incomplete answer, because they still can't explain why a homemade jam recipe looks nothing like a jelly recipe beyond straining.

Sociopath and psychopath aren't different by one rule either
Popular explanations often reduce this to one axis: psychopaths are calculated and controlled, sociopaths are impulsive and erratic. That's one real distinction some researchers draw, but neither term is an official clinical diagnosis — both fall under antisocial personality disorder — and the actual proposed distinctions include origin (psychopathy more linked to innate traits, sociopathy more linked to environment and upbringing), capacity for attachment (psychopaths typically show none, sociopaths may form limited attachments to a small group), and behavioral pattern (calculated versus impulsive). Reducing the whole question to "calculated vs. impulsive" answers one axis and quietly drops the other two.
Weather and climate aren't different by one rule
This one usually gets reduced to timescale: weather is short-term, climate is long-term averages. True, and also incomplete. Weather describes actual atmospheric conditions at a specific place and moment — today's rain, this week's heat. Climate describes the statistical pattern of those conditions over decades, for a region. But there's a second real axis hiding in there: weather is about prediction and immediate experience, while climate is about pattern and trend — which is exactly why "it snowed today, so climate change isn't real" fails as an argument. It's answering a climate-scale question with a weather-scale data point, treating the timescale difference as the whole story when the prediction-versus-pattern difference is doing real work too.
A fourth example shows the pattern isn't domain-specific
Ask the difference between a crocodile and an alligator and the standard answer is snout shape — alligators have wide, U-shaped snouts, crocodiles have narrower, V-shaped ones. Real, and also just one axis. A second is habitat tolerance: alligators mainly tolerate fresh water, crocodiles tolerate both fresh and salt water, because crocodiles have salt-excreting glands alligators lack. A third is visible dentition: when an alligator's mouth is closed, its lower teeth are hidden; when a crocodile's mouth is closed, its fourth lower tooth stays visible. Someone who only learns the snout shape can still misidentify an animal in salt water or with its mouth closed, because the one axis they were given doesn't cover those situations.
Why one axis feels like enough
The first distinction that comes to mind usually is real — jelly probably is smoother than jam, psychopaths probably are more calculated on average, weather probably is shorter-term than climate. The problem isn't that the first axis is wrong. It's that stopping there implies there's only one axis, when most real "what's the difference" questions are actually bundling two or three distinct dimensions that happen to correlate with each other, without being the same dimension.
How to catch a bundled question
A quick test: after giving the first distinction, ask whether a case could exist where that distinction holds but the two things still feel meaningfully different for another reason. If yes, there's a second axis hiding underneath the first one, and a complete answer needs to surface it rather than stopping at the one that came to mind first.
Many "what's the difference" questions aren't asking for one dividing line — they're asking about several real distinctions bundled together under one phrase.
Giving the first true answer isn't wrong. Stopping there, without checking whether a second real axis exists, is what turns an accurate explanation into an incomplete one.
