"Think of it like a water pipe." "It's basically a filing cabinet." "It works like a muscle." Analogies are the default tool for explaining anything unfamiliar, and they're treated as if they're automatically helpful. They aren't. A bad analogy can leave someone more confused than no explanation at all, because it hands them a confident, specific, wrong mental model instead of an honest gap.

Why a good analogy works

An analogy works by mapping an unfamiliar structure onto a familiar one, so the listener can borrow intuitions they already have rather than building new ones from nothing. Electricity explained as water flowing through a pipe works reasonably well because both systems share real structural features: pressure, flow rate, resistance, and a source driving the movement. The mapping isn't perfect, but the shared structure is genuine, not decorative.

Why a bad analogy actively misleads

A bad analogy borrows surface resemblance without shared structure. Explaining the immune system as an "army fighting invaders" is common and intuitive, but it imports a set of assumptions — centralized command, clear friend-or-foe identification, deliberate strategy — that don't match how the immune system actually behaves, which is closer to a decentralized, probabilistic, often self-correcting mess with no central general making calls. Someone who takes the army analogy literally will misunderstand autoimmune conditions, allergic reactions, and vaccine mechanisms, because the analogy actively suggests a wrong model of how the underlying system decides what to attack.

The danger isn't that the analogy is imperfect — every analogy is imperfect by definition. The danger is when the imperfection sits exactly where the listener will build the wrong conclusion, and the analogy feels complete enough that they never notice they've been handed a wrong turn instead of a shortcut.

How to tell the difference before you use one

A reliable test: identify specifically which structural features the analogy shares with the real thing, and specifically which features it doesn't. If you can't name where the analogy breaks down, you don't actually know whether it's a good one — you've just noticed that it feels intuitive, which is not the same test. The water-pipe electricity analogy breaks down around AC current and reactive components; a careful teacher flags that boundary explicitly instead of letting the student assume the mapping holds everywhere.

The safest analogies are the ones whose failure points are stated up front, not discovered later by the listener the hard way.

Why people reach for bad analogies anyway

Under time pressure, the first analogy that comes to mind gets used, and the first one that comes to mind is usually the most culturally familiar one, not the most structurally accurate one — "army" for immune system, "brain as computer" for cognition, "family" for any organizational structure. Familiar analogies get selected for their availability, not their fit, which is exactly backward from how they should be chosen.
