Practice only makes permanent.
"Practice makes perfect" is one of the most repeated pieces of advice in education, sport, music, and professional training. It sounds obvious. The more you do something, the better you become at it.
Except that isn't what practice actually does.
Practice makes whatever you repeat easier to repeat. If the thing you're repeating is effective, you'll probably improve. If it's inefficient, incomplete, or simply wrong, you'll become increasingly efficient at making the same mistake.
Repetition strengthens behaviour. It does not judge whether that behaviour deserves strengthening.
The brain rewards familiarity
Learning is largely about reducing effort. As we repeat an action, the brain gradually spends less energy performing it. Movements become smoother. Decisions become faster. Patterns become automatic.
That efficiency is one of the greatest advantages of practice. It is also one of its greatest dangers.
The brain does not automatically distinguish between good habits and bad ones. It simply becomes more efficient at whichever patterns receive repeated use.
A golfer can reinforce an incorrect swing. A musician can reinforce poor timing. A programmer can reinforce inefficient habits. A cook can reinforce poor knife technique. A manager can reinforce ineffective communication.
After enough repetition, those patterns stop feeling like choices. They become the person's normal way of doing things.
There's a real research framework behind this, with three distinct levels
This isn't just an idea. Psychologist Anders Ericsson, whose 1993 study of expert violinists became the foundation for much of the modern research on skill acquisition, later formalized this distinction into three named categories in his book Peak.
The first is naive practice: simply doing an activity repeatedly and trusting that repetition alone will improve it. Playing casual pickup basketball for years, or running through the same guitar chords without checking whether they're accurate, both count. Research on this level consistently finds that it has almost no effect on skill beyond a basic starting competence—and in some fields, such as medicine, performance has been shown to gradually decline over a career built on this alone rather than improve.
The second is purposeful practice: setting a specific, measurable goal, deliberately pushing past your comfort zone, and monitoring your own results. This is a real, meaningful step up from naive practice, and it is achievable by almost anyone without outside help. But working alone means there is a ceiling. You cannot reliably catch flaws you do not know how to see in your own performance.
The third is deliberate practice, the category Ericsson's original research was actually about: purposeful practice with one more ingredient added—an expert who understands the specific weaknesses common at your stage and can design exercises targeting exactly those gaps, backed by real-time correction.
Where the "10,000 hours" idea actually went wrong
Ericsson's 1993 violin study is also the source of the widely repeated "10,000-hour rule"—the claim that 10,000 hours of practice in any field produces expertise. That claim comes from a popular 2008 book, not from Ericsson's own conclusion, and Ericsson said so directly, calling the popularized version wrong in several ways.
The actual finding was narrower and more specific: among elite violin students, the amount of time spent specifically in structured, feedback-driven practice predicted skill level—not hours of practice of any kind, and not a fixed number that applies the same way across every field.
A chess player's 10,000 hours of casual games and another chess player's 10,000 hours of studying annotated grandmaster games under a coach are not doing the same work, even though both add up to the same number.
The number captured attention. The actual variable Ericsson was studying—the quality and structure of what happens during those hours—is the part that got lost in translation, which is exactly why "just put in 10,000 hours" so often fails to produce what people expect it to.
Experience is not the same as improvement
People often assume that someone with twenty years of experience must be highly skilled. Sometimes they are. Sometimes they have simply repeated the same year twenty times—the textbook case of naive practice running for two decades, mistaken for expertise because of how much time has passed rather than what happened during it.
Time alone does not produce expertise. Repetition alone does not produce expertise. Even effort alone does not produce expertise.
Improvement happens when performance changes. Someone who keeps doing exactly the same thing in exactly the same way may become faster, more comfortable, and more confident. They may not become any better.
Feedback changes what practice becomes
The difference between naive practice and either of the other two levels is feedback. Feedback interrupts automatic behaviour. It points out what worked, what failed, what changed, and what should happen differently next time.
Sometimes that feedback comes from a teacher, a coach, a mentor, a colleague, or a customer. Sometimes it comes from careful self-observation, which is enough to reach purposeful practice even without an expert present.
Wherever it comes from, its purpose is the same: it prevents today's performance from becoming tomorrow's permanent habit without being examined first.
Practice without feedback often becomes naive repetition. Practice with feedback becomes purposeful. Practice with expert-guided feedback becomes deliberate—the level research has found actually separates elite performers from everyone else putting in comparable hours.
Most plateaus are not caused by lack of effort
Almost everyone reaches a point where improvement appears to stop. The instinctive response is usually to practice more. Sometimes that helps. Often it simply reinforces the very pattern preventing further progress—more hours of naive practice, when what's actually needed is a level up.
Plateaus frequently happen because the learner has exhausted what repetition alone can provide. The next level requires changing technique, breaking an old habit, slowing down, isolating a weakness, or rebuilding part of the skill from the ground up.
The solution is rarely more of the same. It is usually something different.
Experts spend surprising amounts of time fixing small things
From the outside, experts often appear to practice exactly like everyone else—only more. In reality, they usually spend far more time correcting details than repeating performances.
They slow movements down to examine them. They isolate individual components. They deliberately work on weaknesses instead of strengths. They seek criticism instead of avoiding it. They repeatedly interrupt automatic habits before those habits become permanent.
Their practice often looks less impressive than performance because improvement happens in the corrections, not in the repetition.
Better practice asks better questions
Instead of asking, "How many hours have I practiced?" experienced learners often ask different questions.
What exactly am I improving? What mistake keeps repeating? What feedback have I ignored? What part of this skill still feels difficult? What would someone more experienced immediately notice?
Those questions shift practice from repetition toward learning. The goal is no longer to do the skill again. The goal is to leave the session slightly different than when it began.
