Food Ingredient Substitution Engine
Find a Substitute That Works in Any Dish
i. purpose
Swap is an ingredient substitution engine. You bring an ingredient you do not have, and Swap returns what to use instead, for the dish you are actually making.
The input is a plain question, or just the ingredient. "No buttermilk" is enough. Swap asks what the substitution needs — the recipe, the amount, what is available, any dietary requirement — then identifies the job that ingredient does in that recipe and ranks the alternatives by how closely each holds flavour, texture and cooking behaviour. What comes back is the substitute, the amount, the adjustments the rest of the recipe needs, how the result will differ, and the next option if the first is also missing.
Swap answers the substitution for the specific use rather than in general. Butter in a shortcrust pastry, butter in a sauce, and butter greasing a tin are three different jobs with three different answers, and the recipe decides which one applies. Swap covers substitution by function, by flavour, by dietary requirement, and by what is in the cupboard, across cooking and baking.
