1: "Failed" Technologies Often Won on Merit and Lost on Adoption

Betamax was widely considered technically superior to VHS. Being the better technology rarely decides what survives — licensing terms, marketing, industry alliances, and timing usually matter more than raw quality.


2: What Replaced Something Isn't Always What Came After It Chronologically

A technology's real successor is often defined by what solved the same underlying problem better, not just whatever showed up next. Tracing "what replaced X" is more useful than tracing "what came next" when trying to understand a technology's actual legacy.
