A Word That Used to Mean Almost Everything

Ask someone to picture "technology" and most people picture the same handful of things: a phone, an app, a platform, maybe a robot. Almost nobody pictures a washing machine, a zipper, a thermostat, or a bridge — even though every one of those is unmistakably a technology by any honest definition of the word.

Before that, people mostly used technē-rooted language to mean skill or craft, not hardware. The tech industry itself adopted the label as a sector name — "Big Tech," "tech companies," "tech stocks" — and that usage was loud, well-funded, and constantly in the news, which meant it dominated everyday conversation. Meanwhile, computing changed visibly and rapidly within a single lifetime, which made it feel like the technology, worth its own word, while a washing machine's slow, incremental improvements over decades never produced the same sense of before-and-after.

There's also a simple attention effect. New things get talked about; things that already work quietly in the background stop getting mentioned at all. A dishwasher that's been reliably doing its job since 1990 doesn't generate headlines. A new phone does, every single year, whether or not the improvement is significant.

Old Technology Doesn't Disappear — It Becomes Invisible

None of the older technology actually went anywhere. It just stopped being called "technology" once it became normal. A washing machine manages water temperature, agitation cycles, and spin speeds, evolved directly from hand-cranked wringer washers, which themselves evolved from the washboard, which evolved from people beating fabric against rocks in a river. That's an unbroken lineage of real technological development spanning thousands of years, and yet almost nobody would list "washing machine" if asked to name a piece of technology today.

The same pattern holds everywhere. A modern refrigerator's compressor-and-refrigerant cycle traces directly back to 19th-century mechanical cooling systems, solving the same problem ice houses and root cellars solved for centuries before that. A car's internal combustion engine is a direct descendant of the steam engine's basic principle — controlled combustion producing mechanical work — just switched to a different fuel and ignition method. Modern plumbing is a refinement of Roman aqueduct and sewer engineering, not a break from it.

Nothing Today Actually Appeared From Nothing

Today's technology feels like it appeared out of nowhere specifically because the older technology it's built on stopped being visible as technology. A smartphone feels unprecedented, but strip away the branding and it's a stack of much older inventions layered together — a radio, a camera, a calculator, a compass, a flashlight, and a telephone, all of which existed as separate, well-understood technologies for decades or centuries before they got combined into one device.

Kubernetes is often talked about as though it invented a new way of thinking about computing. But its actual conceptual ancestor is factory assembly-line management — coordinating many independent, moving parts toward a shared output, at scale, without a single point of failure. Henry Ford was solving a version of that problem in 1913. Google was solving a digital version of the same coordination problem decades later with its internal Borg system, and Kubernetes is the public version of that.

The Steam Engine and the Factory System, Mapped Forward

The steam engine's real innovation wasn't power — waterwheels and windmills already provided that. Its real innovation was decoupling power from geography: for the first time, a factory didn't need to sit next to a river. That same shift happened again with the electrical grid, when power no longer needed to be generated on-site, and again with cloud computing, when computing power no longer needed to sit in the building using it. Three different eras, three different technologies, solving the exact same underlying problem.

Why This Actually Matters

Treating "technology" as a word that only applies to phones and platforms doesn't just create a blind spot — it erases the actual, continuous story of how humans keep solving the same handful of problems (moving things, storing things, communicating over distance, preserving food, generating power) with whatever tools their era happens to have. The printing press and the internet are the same problem — how to spread information faster and further than one person can carry it by hand — solved five hundred years apart with completely different materials. The telegraph and Kubernetes are, at a structural level, both about coordinating something reliably across a distance where things can fail.
